The Cut Stone Process
At Indiana Limestone Company, our architectural stone expertise and the breadth of our cut dimension stone facilities, enable us to supply both large and small architectural stone projects. Our in-house cut stone process features important attention to detail and value engineering to assure top quality fabrication every step of the way.
Evaluation and Drawings
At Indiana Limestone Company, all custom cut limestone projects start with a detailed evaluation of the architectural and structural drawings including the development of a quantity take-off survey. The quantity survey is used to develop the bid documents and is the basis for creating the detailed limestone shop drawings. The limestone shop drawings are drafted in the latest version of Auto-Cad by our Engineering Department. The completed limestone shop drawings are submitted for review to the project contractors and architect. Once the limestone shop drawings are finalized, our Engineering Department creates a shop ticket detailing all aspects of each limestone piece. All Auto-Cad shop tickets are assigned a unique identification code by our StoneTracker program. This proprietary program and barcode system is used for the fabrication planning and tracking of each and every limestone piece until its delivery to the job site.
Matching and Cutting
Starting at the Production Engineering Department, each and every piece is first matched with the raw block material that best suits the project and then directed and scheduled through the appropriate fabrication route. Great care is taken to ensure that the best material yield is planned and that your schedules are met. The first cutting operation is performed by our Slabbing Department, where raw block material is cut into slabs. After the limestone is slabbed, the shape of the finished piece drives the follow-on fabrication processes.
Shapes
Wall panels and other rectangular pieces are processed through a multiple sawing line where the slabs are ripped and jointed into their final sizes for further processing by our stonecutters. Other pieces are scheduled through our CNC sawing center, capable of cutting almost any complex or irregular shaped pieces. Pieces requiring a profile are processed through our Planer Department where eight planers and three large lathes are capable of making large columns, capitals and bases. Our Planer Department is self- sufficient and employs three sawing stations for pre-sizing the planer stock and jointing to length the profiled pieces. The Cutter and Carving Department employs the finest craftsmen who apply the final hand workmanship to each piece. This includes true works of art, such as Corinthian capitals, carved cornice moldings, etc.
Shipping and Delivery
The final stop for every finished piece of limestone is the Shipping Department. Great care is taken in packaging to ensure your stone arrives at the job site free of damage or impairment.
